ARACHSYS INTERNET SERVICES LTD SHELL ACCOUNT ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY 1. In what follows, "we" or "us" refers to Arachsys Internet Services Ltd and "you" refers to the individual(s) or organisation(s) purchasing and using the account. In addition, "your users" refers to any third parties to whom you grant access to services running within or associated with your shell account. 2. The total space taken up by files in your account on our server (including web sites, mail boxes and databases) must not exceed the storage allowance of the account you have purchased. If you find you need additional space, please ask us about increasing the size of your account. If you exceed the space limit, we reserve the right to request that you immediately remove files until you return within the allocated quota. 3. During any calendar month, the total amount of data transferred to and from services running in or associated with your account (including web, ftp and mail traffic) must not exceed the transfer allowance of the account you have purchased. If you are likely to require additional bandwidth, please ask us about increasing the size of your account. We reserve the right to charge for bandwidth use above that included in you shell account package. 4. You must receive and read all messages sent to the aliases 'postmaster' and 'abuse' in every mail domain you host on our servers. We recommend you also configure the aliases 'hostmaster' and 'webmaster' in every mail domain. 5. You must ensure that any services (including CGI scripts) that you or your users make publicly executable on our web server do not compromise the security of our system in any way, including (but not limited to) allowing access to a shell prompt or other users' files. 6. Neither you nor your users may attempt to use our systems to adversely affect any other Internet host. This prohibition includes such activities as attempting to bypass their security mechanisms, deliberately subjecting them to excessive load, or other denial of service attacks. 7. You are responsible for the content of your web sites and mail messages you send, including obtaining the legal permission for any works they include and ensuring that the content does not violate English law. You accept responsibility for any defamatory, confidential, secret or proprietary material made available through web sites hosted in your account, or transmitted by electronic mail through our systems by you or your users. 8. You may not advertise any of your web sites, nor cause another person to advertise them, by techniques that would be classified as abuse if they were carried out from an Arachsys account. This includes, but is not limited to, the sending of unsolicited bulk/commercial mail, or excessive posting on news groups or web forums. Such action will be treated as a violation of this Acceptable Use Policy even where our systems were not involved in the abuse. 9. The root page (typically index.html) of web sites hosted on our servers must not contain anything liable to offend. A clear warning must always be displayed next to any links to material that may be considered offensive. 10. We may require that web sites or CGI scripts which, in our opinion, put an excessive load on our system be modified or moved to another server. 11. We reserve the right to remove from your account any material which breaches this policy, or to require you to remove it immediately, without further explanation or prior notice. 12. All use of our mail server (including arranging for replies to a message to be sent to an address hosted by us, even though that message may not originate in our system) must comply with this Acceptable Use Policy. We will take action against anyone using our facilities in breach of these rules. If you issue email addresses hosted through our system to third parties, you first must ensure they agree to abide by the terms of this agreement. 13. The sending of chain letters, pyramid-sales schemes and unsolicited bulk/commercial email; forging headers or addresses; "mail bombing" and inappropriate use of mailing lists (such as subscribing someone without their permission) are strictly forbidden. In addition, you must not send any material which is illegal to possess or transmit over a public telecommunications network. 14. Should we consider it necessary, we reserve the right to make a public announcement regarding breaches of this policy and including disclosure of the offender's identity. 15. We reserve the right to vary this Acceptable Use Policy at our sole discretion at any time and without prior notice. 16. Any decision made by us in relation to this Acceptable Use Policy or the technical provision of our shell account services shall be final.
